The Voyagers Log 05 - Python: The Christmas Break That Built a Language

In 1982, a student walks out of the University of Amsterdam with a degree in math and computer science. Nothing about that day suggests he's about to build one of the most used programming languages on Earth.
He takes a job at CWI, a research institute across town. The task: help build a language called ABC, designed to make programming easier to learn. Clean syntax. Simple to teach. ABC should have taken off.
It didn't. No way to extend it. No way to plug in new tools or connect to other systems. A well-meaning idea that hit a wall.
I'm here at the University of Amsterdam, where this story starts, to ask a simple question. What do you do when the thing you built doesn't work, but you still believe in the idea behind it?
For Guido van Rossum, the answer came over a Christmas break in 1989. No deadline, no team, no plan beyond keeping busy during the holidays. He sat down and started writing a new language. Same goal as ABC: readable, simple, welcoming to beginners. But this time, built to grow. Extensible. Able to talk to other systems instead of standing alone.
He named it after a British comedy show he liked. Monty Python. Because why not.
That holiday project became Python. It took a couple more years to reach the public, and decades to become the backbone of data science, machine learning, and half the tools we use every day. Nobody planned that outcome in 1989. A programmer just wanted something better than what he'd already tried.
That's usually how it goes. The tools we now treat as obvious weren't inevitable. Someone got frustrated, took a break, and decided to try again.
